The enemy tries to hurt us in two ways: by the power of the serpent to deceive and the power of the scorpion to sting Lk.10:19. Perhaps the greater of these two weapons is deception. In the words of Jesus, the love of God with all the heart, soul, mind and strength is the first commandment, and the other is to love your neighbour as yourself Mk.12:30-31. None can love like this without God, therefore many fall short.

Whatever you love more than God will be the door by which the enemy comes in to deceive you, and lure you to sin against Him. Eve was deceived and fell into transgression because she loved herself more than God 1Tim.2:14; Judas was deceived and betrayed Jesus for the love of money; Jesus was not deceived because He loves God.

How may a believer avoid the transgression brought on by deception? By surrendering to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, drawing sap daily from the ‘Vine’, of which you are a branch Jn.15:5. Get revelation knowledge of your true identity ‘in Christ’, else you will be sold an alternate image, one that does not correlate with what God says. Not everyone who calls Jesus ‘Lord’, who follows Him, will enter the Kingdom of heaven, but those who do the will of the Father Mt.7:21-23. He will claim never to have known them because they neither had personal relationship with Him nor surrendered to His Lordship.

Accepting Jesus as Saviour and recognising Him as Lord are two sides of a coin: Saviour is the life He gave to you; Lord is the authority you give Him over that life. You need to ‘continue in faith, love, and holiness with self-control’ 1Tim.2:15, surrendering to the sovereign will of Almighty God, the Lordship of Jesus Christ and the leading of the Holy Spirit. When you receive Christ as Saviour and Lord, grace is supplied ‘to bring about the obedience of faith’ Rom.1:5.

In Christ, under His Lordship, you already have power over all the power of the enemy such that nothing shall by any means hurt you. Your Lord is your Master; without Him you can do nothing. Do not wander from your place Prov.27:8, else you will either be deceived or stung.
